Human studies

Cognitive development and functioning

  • A review of scientific studies stated that folates and vitamin B12 have fundamental roles in CNS function at all ages. Folic acid and vitamin B12 may have roles in the prevention of disorders of CNS development, mood disorders, and dementias, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia in elderly people (Study)

  • Another scientific publication says that vitamin B12 deficiency causes a wide range of hematological, gastrointestinal, psychiatric and neurological disorders and that vitamin B12 deficiency has been correlated negatively with cognitive functioning in healthy elderly subjects. Symptoms include slow mentation, memory impairment, attention deficits and dementia (Study)

  • A trial of 201 elderly patients (>75 years old) with moderate vitamin B12 deficiency concluded that results do not support the hypothesis that the correction of moderate vitamin B12 deficiency, in the absence of anemia and of neurologic and cognitive signs or symptoms, has beneficial effects on neurologic or cognitive function in later life (Study)

  • A review study stated that vitamin B12 is essential for brain development, neural myelination, and cognitive function. Inadequate vitamin B12 status during pregnancy and early childhood has been associated with adverse child health outcomes, including impaired cognitive development (Study)
